A dental implant is the most authentic alternative to a natural tooth. Dr. Jameela Jifri, along with her proficient team at Scott and Derry Dental Care, strongly believes that this solution for lost teeth should be accessible to all patients. We work hard to ensure that dental implants are within the financial reach of most of our patients across Milton, Ontario.
Why might I consider dental implants for my smile?
Dental bridges and dentures have a long-standing reputation as trusted solutions for tooth replacement, catering to numerous patients’ needs. However, these dental prosthetics just rest upon gum tissue, which can compromise their stability and comfort. They also lack the ability to provide the necessary stimulation to the facial bone. This results in bone resorption, which causes a higher potential for a collapsed look in the lower third of one’s facial structure.

Dental implants are titanium roots that are replaced in the jawbone to resemble a tooth or group of teeth. A screw is inserted through the gums and into the jawbone. A porcelain crown is then attached to the screw to become the new tooth or teeth. They can be used to support dental prosthesis, including crowns, dentures, and bridges. Today’s treatments are so natural looking, no one will know you had surgery. There is approximately a 95 percent success rate for all implants. With modern advances in dentistry, some implants can be restored immediately with lifelike all-porcelain crowns. For more details, ask your dentist.
What are the benefits of choosing implants with an experienced dentist in my area?
Dental implants offer many benefits compared to conventional options. Comprised of biocompatible titanium, a dental implant is strategically positioned within the jawbone to replace the root of a lost tooth. This meticulous process requires local anesthetics and, for some, sedation. The minor cut in the gum tissue heals quickly, and within a few months, the bone integrates with the implant. Eventually, it forms a sturdy base for a restorative procedure.
Due to its placement in the jaw, whenever you bite down, the dental implant sends a signal to your body that indicates the need for stronger bone. Restoring your chewing ability helps maintain bone density and contributes to a youthful aesthetic.
How are dental implants restored?
If you are missing a tooth, a dental implant crown may be the perfect solution. This method isn’t limited to a single tooth. It can be applied to multiple teeth in diverse areas within the mouth. In cases with a gap of three to five consecutive missing teeth, we might recommend a dental bridge secured with two implants. A significant advantage of this approach is that the neighboring healthy teeth remain intact, with no need for enamel reductions.
Although you can replace a full arch of lost teeth with standalone implants, an implant-secured denture is a more cost-efficient alternative. This method only requires the strategic placement of as few as four implants designed to stabilize the denture securely. A traditional denture that “floats” only restores about 20 percent of your chewing capability. However, an implant-anchored denture remarkably enhances this function by up to 90 percent.

The pre-exam before any work was done was extremely thorough. Can't say have been to another dentist that gave that amount of attention to the small details.

Dental Implants FAQs
What are dental implants?
Each dental implant represents a portion of a replacement tooth. This form of tooth replacement is highly sought after because it is considered to be the most authentic alternative to natural teeth. Because implants are used, these teeth are designed to imitate the structure of natural teeth. No other method of tooth replacement mimics the design of natural teeth.
How are implants “designed”?
Implants are cylinder-shaped posts. They are designed to replace and function like tooth roots. In order to do this, each implant must be positioned in the jawbone during a straightforward, in-office surgical procedure. After the implant is placed, it will osseointegrate or naturally grow with the surrounding supportive bone in the jaw. This is due to the use of biocompatible materials to make the implant, which are designed to naturally integrate with the surrounding tissues. Once this process is complete, we can restore the implant with a dental crown.
How many teeth can be replaced with implants?
We can replace a single tooth with one implant attached to a dental crown. Or, we can use two implants to replace a few teeth with an implant-supported dental bridge. As few as four implants may be inserted and secured in the jaw to support an upper or lower denture. So, we may be able to replace all of the teeth with as few as eight implants.
How is it possible to support so many teeth with so few implants?
Due to advanced techniques and the use of sophisticated planning technologies, we can place implants in such a way as to maximize the available bone in the jaw. This approach allows us to get maximum support with a minimal number of implants. Due to the precise way that we place each and every implant, even individuals who have sustained bone loss can benefit from implants without having to undergo bone grafting to build up the jaw.
What is bone loss?
Bone loss or resorption is often the result of tooth loss. The bone in the jaw derives its strength from the teeth that are connected to it. Functions such as biting and mashing food with the teeth help to maintain the density, height, and width of the jawbone. However, when teeth are lost, the source of such stimulation goes away. The bone begins to retreat or shrink. As this process occurs, our patients have noticed changes in the appearance of their faces. With facial support gone, they may appear prematurely “aged,” as the lower portion of the faces collapses and the overlying skin and tissues sag. Patients who already had functional challenges due to the loss of teeth may notice increasing difficulty with eating and with basic functions like pronouncing words clearly and properly. Implants stop bone loss or prevent it from occurring in the first place.
How do implants prevent bone loss?
Since the jawbone is connected to the teeth by way of the implants, these supportive tissues continue to get the stimulation they need to maintain a healthy height, width, and density. This characteristic also helps our patients to continue to enjoy natural chewing and speech function and to continue to derive satisfaction from their implant teeth. With other forms of tooth replacement, such as dentures, the bone can still shrink. That’s because the prosthetic tooth is not connected to the underlying bone. When this happens, prosthetic teeth like dentures no longer fit as they cannot conform properly to the supportive tissues. Over time, the denture may need to be relined or rebased for a proper fit. Ultimately, the denture must be replaced. Implant teeth, however, can last a lifetime.
How do I care for my implants?
Practice good brushing and flossing habits. The biggest threat to the implant comes from what’s called “peri-implant disease.” This gum-disease-like process can arise due to inadequate oral hygiene and affects the tissues surrounding the implant. With good care and routine visits to our office for professional cleanings and exams, you can enjoy the many benefits of implants for life without complications.
