Endodontic therapy, commonly known as root canal treatment, is a dental procedure that involves accessing the inner part of the tooth to treat infection or inflammation. This treatment is usually recommended when the tooth’s pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels, becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, or repeated dental procedures. During the procedure, Dr. Jifri will carefully remove the dental pulp, clean the inner tooth canals, and fill the tooth with gutta-percha to seal off the tooth and protect it from further infection. A dental crown may be placed on the tooth for added protection and strength.

It is critical that patients keep in mind that root canal therapy is a relatively non-invasive procedure. Therefore, getting stitches after a root canal treatment is not typically necessary. In some cases, however, stitches might be required if a surgical incision was made during the procedure.

If you do require stitches after your root canal, Dr. Jifri and her team will provide specific aftercare instructions on how to protect them. Keep the area clean and avoid any behaviours that could disrupt the healing process, such as smoking or drinking alcohol. She may also prescribe antibiotics to reduce the potential of infection after the procedure.
