Will tooth extraction provide wisdom tooth pain relief?
Our team at Scott and Derry Dental Care of Milton, Ontario, is regularly asked by our patients about their wisdom teeth and what needs to be done for them. These teeth, also known as the third molars, develop last in the smile. They often begin to erupt through the gum line in the late teen and early adult years. Since they are the last teeth to emerge, often, there isn’t enough room in the smile for them, and they can become impacted. This means they are stuck below the gum line or only partially erupt.
Additionally, wisdom teeth that do have room to erupt through the gums may contribute to other dental problems. They may cause pain and discomfort because of their positioning, contribute to overcrowding, and cause misalignment of the existing teeth. In some instances, because of their location at the back of the mouth, they are difficult to clean and can cause periodontal disease to develop. For many of our patients, especially those looking for pain relief, we may recommend tooth extractions to alleviate the pain and eliminate the problems associated with wisdom teeth.
What tooth extraction services are available at Scott and Derry Dental Care?
Dr. Jameela Jifri and her team are pleased to offer different types of extractions depending on the patient’s unique situation. Most of our patients will benefit from either of the following to address their wisdom teeth:
- Simple extraction. Some patients with wisdom teeth may only need a simple extraction. This is when the dentist uses special instruments to grip the crown of the wisdom tooth and remove it quickly from the bone of the jaw. The recovery from simple extraction is relatively fast and simple
- Surgical extraction. Patients with impacted wisdom teeth or teeth that have not emerged from the gums may instead need surgical tooth extractions. Surgical tooth extractions require Dr. Jameela Jifri or her associates to cut into the gum tissues to access the teeth underneath the gums. They are manually removed, and the area is sutured. Because this is a more invasive method, it does require more downtime and recovery but can eliminate the problems that bring patients in for pain relief
