Supporting a lifetime of smiles with early and routine pediatric dental care

Our neighbors across the Milton, Ontario, area are never too young to benefit from professional dental services. Even before children are born, we like to assess and support the mothers’ oral health, knowing that conditions like periodontal disease can have negative consequences for an unborn child. Expectant mothers with advanced gum disease, for instance, are at increased risk of having premature or low birthweight babies. Once the child is born, Scott and Derry Dental Care will want to check for problems in some cases even before the first teeth are visible in the mouth!
Why are these early visits so important?
Establishing a healthy dental “regimen” or routine early on is essential for several reasons. Notably, even before the first tooth breaks through or erupts, we want to ensure that the parent or caregiver understands how to properly clean the gums and parts of the mouth harboring “bad stuff,” like bacteria. Once the teeth begin to peek through, maintaining proper care is also essential. These teeth may be temporary, but they are still important to the development of the secondary or adult teeth and the child’s overall development. Lastly, establishing a routine early on helps children get and continue on the right track for their dental health. As children get older and their motor skills are better refined, they can start to brush and floss their teeth independently. They are active and positive participants in this oral health journey!
How often should my child visit your office?
Here, the same rules apply to adult patients as to pediatric patients. We can schedule your appointment for your convenience at the same time as your child’s. Even children with no risk factors for decay, disease, or other oral conditions must visit at least twice a year for routine exams by Dr. Jameela Jifri and professional cleanings (dental prophylaxis) by one of our kind and experienced dental hygienists. These biannual appointments are great opportunities for us to check for any potential changes from the last visit and to intervene proactively before any painful damage arises. It’s also a great way to continue to get young patients familiar and comfortable with us and to provide and demonstrate age-appropriate cleaning techniques and tooth-friendly tips.
Is there a “right way” to brush the teeth?
Yes! A soft-bristled toothbrush designed for small mouths can be very helpful. From there, we encourage your child not to brush aggressively. All it takes is a gentle touch. It’s important to brush thoroughly, catching all sides of the tooth so that the surface is left untouched. A little toothpaste also goes a long way; apply a small dot of paste. Once the teeth begin to touch, incorporate daily flossing into the routine. Tight spaces where bacteria, food particles, and plaque can hide.
