“Dress up” your flawed teeth with veneers … for chips, gaps, stubborn stains, and more!

Veneers are consistently recognized as one of the top cosmetic dentistry procedures. There are many reasons for the popularity of these thin layers of tooth-like material. At Scott and Derry Dental Care, we take great pride in offering appealing treatment to our friends and neighbours in the Milton, Ontario, area. Many patients often inquire about this procedure to address issues such as gaps, chips, and irregularly sized and poorly shaped teeth. Our team, led by Dr. Jameela Jifri, is pleased to share some of the most common questions we receive along with our answers.
How do veneers “work”?
Veneers involve preparing, applying, and securing thin layers of dental material to the front surfaces of the teeth that are visible when you smile. These teeth are healthy but have imperfections in the surface appearance, shape, size, spacing, and colour. After the veneer is bonded to the cosmetically “imperfect” tooth, those flaws disappear! Veneers cover them up beautifully and naturally.
What materials do you use?
The most popular materials are composite resin and porcelain. The latter dental ceramic is particularly appealing because porcelain is known to replicate the properties of natural tooth enamel and resist future staining. However, each material has different considerations, which we are happy to discuss with you during a consultation at our office.
How long does it take?
Getting veneers is fast; you don’t have to wait for results. With porcelain veneers, we generally can complete everything in just two visits. During the first visit, we make “imprints” of your teeth, which our lab then uses to create your veneers. The teeth to be treated are also “prepped” to accommodate the thickness of the veneer that will be placed on top of them. Each veneer is fixed securely to its corresponding tooth during the second visit. You immediately see the results – a dramatically enhanced smile blends beautifully with your natural facial features.

So, you are not replacing my teeth?
No. Veneers are appropriate for individuals who have cosmetic concerns over their teeth. They are different from implants, bridges, or dentures, which replace teeth that have been irreversibly damaged. Veneers simply cover up your natural, healthy teeth to make them look nicer. Think of them as “dressing up” your teeth!
How long do veneers last?
Veneers are not only aesthetically pleasing; they are also very strong and durable. With good care, they can last for 15 years or longer. Now, it is important to refrain from any damaging habits. Those behaviours that can damage your natural teeth can also damage dental work, and they include:
- Chewing ice
- Opening packages with your teeth
- Biting your fingernails
- Chronic, untreated bruxism (teeth grinding and jaw clenching)
