Rebuild your tooth

During your recall visit or examination, Dr. Jifri and her team may find a large cavity too big to repair with a simple filling. Likewise, an existing filling may not support the tooth adequately. A filling, too, maybe old and worn and require replacement. Our team is all about treatments that sustain health over the long term. Your dentist may recommend an inlay, or a partial crown (onlay) or a full crown in such cases. We colour-match a toothlike material, such as dental ceramic-like porcelain, and shape it precisely to replace the damaged tooth structure that is removed. After all, the natural tooth must be “prepared” in addition to the replacement tooth structure. As it relates to a full-coverage dental crown, the porcelain is matched to blend in with the surrounding teeth, and then it is shaped to fit over the prepared natural tooth. Crowns are also known as “caps,” so the replacement tooth material fits over natural tooth matter like a cap or crown fits over the head.

Replace your tooth

Crowns can be used to preserve the natural tooth structure or to replace a missing tooth. Often, the crown is the final touch after a badly damaged tooth is treated with root canal therapy. It may be the only way to save the natural tooth. If a tooth can’t be saved with root canal treatment, we recommend getting the extracted tooth replaced as soon as possible. Bone loss happens quickly and can be quite destructive.

Tooth replacement options such as implant-retained bridges and dentures preserve the health and density of the bone in your jaw. Bridges traditionally involve at least two crowns. The crowns are placed over anchor teeth, which support the pontic or replacement tooth. The crowns and pontic are then fixed securely to the natural anchor teeth on either side of the gap. Crowns are also placed on top of, and connected to, the dental implant in the jaw. Implants join the surrounding jawbone. So, they function like tooth roots to stabilize crowns, bridges, and dentures.
