What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are restorations fabricated to cover the facing of a tooth near the front of the smile that has an imperfection. These restorations are made with porcelain that is fabricated to match the patient’s existing teeth to achieve a natural appearance. The facings are extremely thin and are bonded onto the tooth. With proper care, these restorations will last many years and provide appropriate coverage for imperfections.
What can I expect before, during, and after porcelain veneer placement?
- Before – before patients have the veneers created, they need to consult with their dentist to make sure it is the most advantageous option for them. Not everyone is a good candidate, so this initial evaluation will determine if a patient is a candidate or not.
- During – preparations begin, which include the filing down of the front of the treated tooth. A mold is made and sent to a dental laboratory where a ceramist will create a porcelain restoration. Patients return to the office when the restoration is complete to have it bonded onto the prepared tooth.
- After – after the porcelain veneer has been placed, Dr. Jameela Jifri and her associates will educate patients on how to care for their new restoration to extend its longevity. Most porcelain veneers will last many years with proper attention.
