Immediate Dental Care: Your Solution for Same-Day Emergency Appointments at Scott and Derry Dental Care

Not all issues arise at convenient times. When a dental emergency happens outside regular business hours, you might be unsure who you can turn to. This is why Dr. Jameela Jifri and her Scott and Derry Dental Care team are excited to offer same-day dental visits when you need them most! Let’s take a look at emergency dental services and what you can expect from our experienced team of providers.

What is an emergency dental situation?

You might be unsure what constitutes an emergency dental visit. An emergency dental situation is any sudden or unexpected problem requiring immediate attention to alleviate pain, stop bleeding, save a tooth, or address other urgent issues related to oral health. These emergencies can happen at any time and often require prompt treatment to prevent further complications.

What are some common types of emergency dental situations that might arise?

At Scott and Derry Dental Care, we offer a range of emergency dental services for the following situations:

  • Severe toothache or pain that cannot be eased with over-the-counter medication.
  • A broken or chipped tooth from either trauma or accident.
  • A knocked-out tooth due to physical impact.
  • A loose or partially dislodged permanent tooth.
  •  Bleeding from the mouth due to injury, infection, or other causes.
  • Swelling or an abscess in the soft tissues of the mouth, such as the gums or cheeks.
  • Lost fillings or crowns that need to be replaced immediately.
  • Any other urgent dental concern that requires immediate attention and treatment.

What can you expect during a same-day emergency dental visit?

When you call our office with an emergency dental situation, we will do our best to see you on the same day whenever possible. If needed, we can prescribe medication or make treatment suggestions over the phone until you can get into our office for professional care. Sometimes, we may have you come in the following day to best address your needs, especially if a problem happens overnight.

We may also recommend visiting the local emergency room for medical attention if one of our dentists is not available at the moment of your dental emergency. We do our best to provide same-day dental appointments for both new and existing patients in our practice, offering care when our patients need it most!

Emergency Dentist FAQs

Is a toothache an emergency?

Toothaches can be a symptom of very serious conditions. When you have an aching tooth, it is important to contact us right away. We can schedule an appointment to have your tooth looked at promptly. If the pain is intense and affecting your life, we view that as an emergent condition. We want to get you back to being healthy and feeling like yourself again. In these cases, we try to arrange same-day appointments.

What serious conditions are associated with toothaches?

An aching tooth may be symptomatic of a deep infection inside the tooth. Infections do not always “stay put.” They can travel to other parts of your mouth. In fact, some infections or abscesses are medical emergencies. We urge you to seek care at the nearest ER if facial swelling and severe pain are also accompanied by symptoms like tender lymph nodes, problems swallowing, and fever.

Can my tooth be saved?

Not only can we relieve intense pain and symptoms promptly, but we may be able to “save” even severely damaged teeth. We can remove the source of infections with procedures like root canal therapy. We can even preserve teeth that have sustained trauma or injuries due to falls or contact with other objects, such as blows to the face during sports. This includes teeth that are partially or even fully dislodged from your mouth.

How do you treat a knocked-out tooth?

When it comes to knocked out or avulsed teeth it is critical to get to our office as soon as possible. The faster we can replant the tooth in its socket, the greater the odds of success from treatment and of preserving the tooth. In fact, to increase your odds of successful treatment, we should care for the tooth between 30 to 60 minutes after it is knocked out of its socket.

Should I put the knocked-out tooth back in my mouth?

Handle the tooth gently by the white part (crown). Rinse any debris with water or milk. If it’s safe to do so, carefully insert the tooth back into its socket. Alternately, place the tooth in a Save-a-Tooth solution if you have it on hand or in milk. The tooth must be kept moist, but do not use water. It must have the right environment to support the viability of the attached tissues.

Is there anything I can do at home to help with my pain and swelling?

We can recommend appropriate home care when you call us to schedule an appointment. Rinsing with salt water and applying a cold compress can be helpful. We may also prescribe medications to help with the pain in the interim.

Can I prevent dental emergencies?

Many of the conditions that lead to the need for emergency dental care can be prevented. For instance, routine checkups and cleanings help detect and treat problems early before they cause pain and potentially significant damage. Even the risk of injuries to the teeth and mouth may be minimized by wearing a custom dental appliance known as a sports mouthguard when playing football, hockey, basketball, and other organized sports and activities associated with contact with equipment, players, and other items.
