Zeroing in on the mouth to support your best health with safe, detailed digital X-rays

Oral X-ray services are a staple of many routine dental visits or recall appointments. Yet, Scott and Derry Dental Care understand that, while common, this diagnostic service can also be a source of anxiety. Our patients from across Milton, Ontario, have considerable peace of mind in our use of advanced, low-radiation exposure digital X-rays. Since we get so many questions about this process, it is our pleasure to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about this important component of your proactive care programme – to keep your smile happy, healthy, and brilliantly beautiful.
What are the different types of X-rays?
There are largely conventional film-based and digital X-rays that do not use films, chemicals, and processing techniques to make images of your mouth and associated structures. X-rays can be categorized into intraoral and extraoral types.
What are intraoral X-rays?
The most common type of radiography involves collecting images of the inside of the mouth. These X-rays offer deeper insights into your oral health by showing evidence of cavities, assessing the condition of the roots of the teeth and the bone surrounding the teeth, monitoring the developing teeth for early problems, and tracking the general health of the tooth structure and supportive jawbone.

And what do extraoral X-rays capture?
Taken extraorally or outside of the mouth, we use these X-rays to gather insights into the condition of the jawbone and skull. So, while they do not involve the same detailed images as their intraoral counterpart and are not appropriate to diagnose damage with the individual teeth, we can use these X-rays to:
- Isolate signs of impaction, or erupting teeth that are trapped under the gums in the jaw
- Track the development of the jaw to stay of early challenges to “normal” growth
- Monitor the relationship or balance among the jaws, teeth, and facial bone
Are these X-rays safe?
At Scott and Derry Dental Care, we carefully vet all our technologies to ensure their clinical safety and effectiveness. Digital X-rays, for one, are associated with a fraction of the radiation exposure of conventional X-rays. The benefits do not stop there. They are a “no-wait” process. Digital capabilities have eliminated the processing time associated with developing images. Additionally, they support accurate diagnostics because Dr. Jameela Jifri and associates can easily enhance or enlarge the pictures for better viewing. We can also easily compare current and past X-rays, as subtraction capabilities remove the same details to highlight even the most subtle changes.
We can only treat what we know. We encourage you to learn more about this safe and vital diagnostic service today by calling our office in Milton, ON, at (855) 438-4999.
