Overcoming common denture challenges: The “magic” is in the fit!

Denture services may be available if you have several missing teeth or are holding on to broken, badly damaged teeth that will likely need to come out. And dentures at Scott and Derry Dental Care in Milton, Ontario, are nothing to fear. It has been Dr. Jameela Jifri and associates great pleasure to renew patients’ confidence, chewing ability, enjoyment of varied foods, clear speech, and so much more with these tried-and-true dental appliances.
But aren’t dentures uncomfortable and a big hassle?
No. High-quality, well-fitting dentures should never be uncomfortable or a source of pain. The benefits of dentures also far outweigh any considerations or needs associated with care or maintenance. The key here is “well-fitting.” Poorly fitted dentures are loose in the mouth and tend to shift around. They may rub up against the gums and other parts of the mouth. This treatment can then produce fresh challenges, such as persistent sores. Chewing and other functions can also suffer. You can avoid these issues by getting dentures tailored to fit the tissues and contours of your mouth perfectly.
Why is fit so important?
With traditional removable dentures, the appliance or framework surrounding the prosthetic teeth sits on top of the gums or tissues. So, a snug seal must be between the natural tissues and the appliance. Otherwise, the denture will not conform and begin to slip around.
What if my dentures used to fit, and they don’t anymore?
This happens! Over time, the structural supports in your jaw (such as the bone) can change shape. The bone resorbs or retreats. When the shape of the jaw is altered, your denture no longer fits against it well or like it did at first. Professional denture services are available to help with this problem. As time goes on, however, relining or rebasing the denture and other adjustments may fall short of your needs. When this happens, you may need to explore a new denture. We can even discuss implanted dentures with you!
What do you mean by implanted dentures?
These dentures are held in place, not by natural suction or how the appliance conforms with the tissues. Instead, the denture is stabilized by artificial tooth roots called “implants.” Once inserted in the jaw, the implant is designed to grow to the surrounding bone. Your denture is attached to as few as four of these implants. Since the implants are secure in the jawbone, the denture will not slip around! Plus, implants help support bone health (avoiding bone loss) by strengthening this hard tissue.

How can you help me adjust my dentures better?
This is part of our Scott and Derry Dental Care dentures service. We can provide and demonstrate ways to adjust to your dentures, including suggestions on how to chew and speak with your new teeth. Be patient with yourself. It takes a little time to “retrain” your muscles and tissues. Also, some foods are generally harder to consume with your appliance. We suggest products such as adhesive to help with the adjustment period, adding stability as you learn to chew food with your new denture.
Why are my lower dentures looser than my upper ones?
This is a common issue. Lower dentures often feel less secure in the mouth due to the unique horseshoe shape of the floor of the mouth and the pressure from the tongue. Here, too, products like denture adhesive can be helpful. It may also be time to explore those implant dentures with our team in Milton, ON. We welcome your specific questions and concerns.
